Shootout At Wadala is, in essence, a gangster picture as it is based on the life and death of Manohar Surve who was the scourge of Bombay until he was ambushed by police in 1982.
Here Bolly superstar John Abraham plays Bombay don, Surve and the screenplay is very kind to him. Effectively, it blames his violent streak on him being framed by the police in his youth.
At that point he was a conscientious student, according to the movie. However, I have since read up on Surve and nothing suggests he was as reluctant a criminal in the way he appears in Shootout At Wadala.
But this is grittier than any of his recent movies by a long way with the violence and sex scenes right on the boundary of what the Indian movie industry permits.
Here his love interest in Kangana Ranaut (not Priyanka Chopra as the publicity might suggest). She does a decent job of switching from devotion to desperation as her gentle man becomes Bombay's most feared.
Both Mrs W and I agreed that Shootout At Wadala kept us gripped for its considerable length but I couldn't prevent myself wondering why the film-makers found the need to go for faction instead of basing the entire story on real evidence.
Film companies make some very strange choices when it comes to re-releases.246. I'm So Excited! (Los Amantes Pasajeros) I'M SO EXCITED! (LOS AMANTES PASAJEROS)
Time for a quick catch-up. Pedro Almodovar's latest movie has been out a couple of weeks so it was high time that we made put by a couple of hours for it.245.
The Hangover series reminds me of a hard drinker - funny the first time you encounter him but after a while to be avoided or even pitied.244.
I must admit to spending comparatively few hours in the cinema lately because this is down-time in terms of releases and, also, because I have been lucky enough to have had movies provided by1 242.
I darted out of Screen 2 at Wolverhampton Cineworld to the more sparsely populated Screen 14 just as the chick flick Ishkq In Paris was about to begin.
Sunday afternoon and while most of the UK's citizens were bathing in the sunshine, I drove for an hour to Wolverhampton to watch a Punjabi comedy.
